IBM believes employees' wider exposure is beneficial for both IBM and IBMers

In the first half of 2004, IBM announced it would enhance key programs and policies to assist employees looking for new job opportunities in the company, with a focus on those who may be affected when the business needs to rebalance skills.

The need to rebalance the skills we have available to our business to meet the demands of our clients and the market has become increasingly urgent. To address the changing dynamics of a global workforce and marketplace, IBM has strengthened its employee redeployment process, which is now designed to identify and assist more quickly employees who may be part of skills rebalancing actions. For example, in many cases in the United States, employees have a few months, rather than 30 days, to locate a new position and gain skills for it.
IBM's managers will help you get wider job exposure

At IBM, employee’s career development is a shared responsibility.  Leaders and managers should foster the appropriate climate, provide a career framework, tools, and guidance on growth, and ensure that employees are able to execute the correct learning opportunities to the greatest extent possible. Together, you and your manager should be committed to strengthening your partnership as a way to guide and support employee development. Success requires planning, commitment, and execution from all employees: leaders, managers, and you.

Our managers will schedule periodic meetings to discuss with your performance and career goals. During the meetings, you can share with your managers your aspirations of future career development needs. When your manager has a clear and up-to-date understanding of your goals, when your goals are realistic, they are supporting your execution of your PBC (Personal Business Commitment) and doing contributions to IBM; our managers will facilitate your career development through various efforts, like providing you more related learning resources or help you transfer to other functions to get more exposures if necessary.
2-2-3 Principle

As an IBMer, if you have worked at current position for at least two years, and your Personal Business Commitment is consecutive 2 or above, you are able to find another position within IBM that you are interested in to make an internal transfer and explore your career.
During this process, what you need to do is very simple:

  • Use our BPFJ+ system to locate the desired position you want to take in another business unit or function.
  • Confirm with the manager in the new function that you are the right person for the position and the manager would like welcome you in.
  • If the new manager wants you to join him, what you need to do before the transfer is only to inform your current manager at least three months before your move and leave him a period of time to find a substitute.
  • Within the three months notification period, you will have the responsibility to coach the new employee on your position and make the handover smooth.
